Canadian online pharmacies were outraged over a report issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that cautioned Americans about buying drugs online from Canada, saying many of the pharmaceuticles offered were counterfeit.

Troy Harwood-Jones, president of the Manitoba International Pharmacists Association, said the FDA's claim is "ridiculous," and that "No Americans have become sick from the drugs, or filed a complaint."

Harwood-Jones said the FDA's actions were inappropriate and meant only to scare the public.

In particular, the FDA took issue with Manitoba-based Mediplan Prescription Plus Pharmacy, also known as Mediplan Global Health, which the FDA says it tested numerous shipments of pharmeceuticals sent to the United States by Mediplan and found shipments of the cholesterol drugs Lipitor and Crestor, the painkiller Celebrex, the blood-pressure treatment Diovan, the baldness treatment Propecia and five other prescription drugs contained extremely low doses, below the prescribed levels.

FDA Associate Commissioner Dr. Randall Lutter said, "The actual threat being posed by these is not getting sick from the drug, but not getting better either."

Health Canada said it is working closely with the RCMP to investigate the FDA's counterfeit claims and have been discussing these issues with the FDA.

The founder of Mediplan Prescription Plus Pharmacy, which is based in Winnipeg, said the FDA has not contacted the company about the allegations of selling counterfeit drugs to Americans.  "The FDA hasn't contacted us or told us they had any concern regarding any specific product we were sending," said Mediplan founder Andrew Strempler.

Strempler said, "the U.S. has been waging a war against cheap Canadian prescription drugs being sold to Americans for years."

An ex-RxNorth employee, one of the online pharmacies owned by Strempler, said he'd filed a complaint with the FDA because drugs were being purchased by manufacturers overseas and prescription orders were being filled outside Canada. "We were not to tell customers their medication was coming from the Bahamas," the ex-Strempler employee stated.

Strempler himself has refused to discuss where his drugs are shipped from, saying it would give the FDA one more reason to persecute him.
