Prozac fluoxetine Use Early On Affects Mice
prozacIn an experiment in mice, researchers have found that  treatment with an antidepressant early in life increases the appearance of depression and anxiety-like symptoms in adulthood.

The researchers gave daily doses of fluoxetine, better known by the brand name Prozac, to mice from four days after birth until their normal weaning age of 3 weeks — a period that roughly corresponds in humans to a fetus in the third trimester of pregnancy up to early childhood.

The World Health Organization has called for urgent studies on Roche's flu drug Tamiflu to determine its effectiveness in the fight against bird flu in humans.

In a statement from its Geneva headquarters, the WHO said there was no clinical evidence of the anti-viral drug's efficacy against the deadly H5N1 virus. But it reaffirmed that Tamiflu should be used to treat suspected cases and to prevent the disease in healthcare workers or others who may have been exposed to infection.

Wayne Wilson is cheered when the computerized voice tells him his blood pressure and heart rate are holding steady.

The 82-year-old stays on top of his health with weekly checkups at an electronic kiosk in the lobby of the Beverwyck assisted-living home. On this day, he finds out he's even lost half a pound."That means I can have ice cream tonight," he says.

Wilson is part of a growing number of people monitoring their vital signs through "telemedicine," which allows health care providers to perform checkups by video.
The technology can be as basic as the kiosks Wilson uses, which transmit blood pressure and weight readings to a remote facility monitored by a nurse. On more sophisticated devices, live doctors appear on a screen to listen to everything from a patient's heartbeats to lung waves.
